Artisan & Vine Curated Guide: Conundrum Wine
When you pour a glass of Conundrum, you’re not just enjoying a blend of exceptional California grapes—you’re tasting a piece of Napa Valley winemaking history. What began as a family experiment at the dinner table has evolved into one of the most beloved and recognizable wine brands in the U.S., still deeply connected to the legacy of Caymus Vineyards.

A Wagner Family Legacy of Innovation and Flavor
The story of Conundrum begins with Charlie Wagner Sr., co-founder of Caymus Vineyards and patriarch of the Wagner Family of Wine. Known for his love of blending wines during family dinners, Charlie sought to create a white wine that was as complex as the meals it accompanied. In 1989, that vision became a reality with the first release of Conundrum White.
In its early years, Conundrum was labeled as “Caymus Conundrum,” a nod to its roots. Over time, the wine developed such a strong identity of its own that it was spun off into a standalone brand—though still proudly a member of the Wagner family portfolio.
Still a Wagner Family Wine
Although Conundrum now stands on its own, it remains deeply tied to the Caymus legacy. The winemaking philosophy, sourcing standards, and blending techniques mirror the craftsmanship that made Caymus a Napa icon.
- Shared Heritage: The Wagner family oversees both Conundrum and Caymus, alongside other labels like Mer Soleil and Belle Glos.
- Winemaking Roots: Key winemakers began their careers at Caymus before joining Conundrum, bringing with them the family’s commitment to excellence.
- Blending Philosophy: Conundrum embodies the Wagner belief that blending can elevate wine beyond the character of any single varietal.
What Makes Conundrum Unique
Unlike single-varietal wines, Conundrum embraces the art of blending to craft a layered, food-friendly experience.
- Conundrum White – A lush, aromatic white blend first released in 1989. Its exact composition changes each year but often includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Viognier, and Muscat Canelli. The result: a bright, complex, and slightly exotic wine that pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes.
- Conundrum Red – Introduced in 2011, this red blend combines Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Sirah (among others) for a smooth, approachable wine with vibrant fruit and a velvety finish.
Conundrum sources its grapes from diverse regions across California—including Napa, Monterey, and Santa Barbara—allowing the winemaking team to create consistent complexity vintage after vintage.
